Abdul Qader Al Rais is one of the most acclaimed Emirati artists, the founder of the Emirates Fine Art Society and the winner of numerous prizes. He holds exhibitions worldwide and is known for both his abstract oil paintings, which draw on Arabic script and geometric forms, and his landscape watercolours, which reflect his interest in traditional Emirati architecture and nature.

He left Dubai when he was six to study in Kuwait. The Kuwaiti government was supporting art and they gave him materials. At that time, his teachers were the masters – Raphael, Da Vinci and Rembrandt. He couldn’t read English so he just looked at their pictures in art books. Later, he learned from Monet and Pissarro because he loves impressionism. He studied at grammar school in Kuwait. It was not as an artist that Alison met Abdul Qader but as a rather shy, soft spoken meticulous “official” at the Ministry of Labour who in inspected her first application for residency in the UAE. A small biro sketch on a pad at his side was a clue to his other life, one that would lead to our paths intertwining over the ensuing 35 years.
Can you imagine the Arab World without Abdul Qader Al Rais ? His creativity dedication and sheer talent are a visual testament to the values, aspirations and achievements of a man and a nation.
So much has been written about his life and his work, work that doesn’t ask or need to be analysed, critical appraisal is inappropriate. Abdul Qader Al Rais received his Bachelor’s degree in Sharia Law from the UAE University in Al Ain and developed his artistic practice independently. His first solo exhibition was in the Dubai Public Library in During the following decade he stopped painting, though he co-founded the Emirates Fine Arts Society. He renewed his practice in In that same year he began developing the abstract style for which he is now renowned.
He went on to win numerous awards, including several here at the Cultural Foundation in its Spring Exhibitions. His vast exhibition history includes numerous appearances regionally and internationally, notably a retrospective at the Institut du Monde Arabe (, Paris, France), a retrospective at the Sharjah Art Museum (), inclusion in the UAE Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennial () and a award at the Latakia Biennial (Syria). His work has been extensively collected, including by the British Museum (London) and numerous museums throughout the Gulf.
In , the artist participated in Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years, Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.
