The tourists and adventure-seekers who first arrived in the hills of southern Appalachia in the late nineteenth century clearly thought they were dreaming. In breathless accounts, they described the edenic land they had discovered, one that seemed to exist in a different century from their homes in the industrialized North. Instead of cities choked by smog and factory horns, there were wide open hills, populated by a peculiar, antiquated people. They farmed the land and spoke in near-Elizabethan tones. They entertained themselves at night with fiddles and banjos. Even their dancing was wild, unhinged: country frolics by the light of the moon.

These heavily romanticized reports laid the groundwork for a perception of Appalachia that the region has never truly escaped. Outsiders continue to view the mountains and their inhabitants as simple, even backwards. This attitude has colored everything from the area’s music to its politics. But as Phil Jamison notes in his book Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics, it was the locals’ dancing that truly “epitomized the ‘otherness’ of this…‘strange land’”
Algia Mae Hinton (born August 29, ) is an African American blues guitarist and vocalist based in Johnston County, North Carolina.
She was the youngest child of Alexander and Ollie O'Neal and grew up in an area known as the O'Neal Township, named after the slave-holders who originally owned the land. Her father had been a tenant farmer and eventually earned enough to buy a home and some land in the township. At age nine, Algia Mae learned the guitar from her mother, who was a singer and a guitarist expert in the Piedmont finger-picking style, and who often played at family gatherings, house parties, and services at the local congregation. From her father, who was a dancer, Algia Mae learned buckdancing and the two-step.
In , Algia Mae married Miller R. Hinton. They subsequently moved to Raleigh, where they had seven children. The marriage lasted until , when Miller Hinton was killed. At this point, Algia Mae moved with her children back to the O'Neal township and earned income as a field laborer. In the meantime, she played at house parties in Johnston County, North Carolina and for her children.
In Hinton met folklorist Glenn Hinson, who arranged for her performance
Set oven rack in lower half or lower third of oven. Preheat to degrees for up to an hour before you plan on baking the biscuits. You want it really hot. Scoop the flour into your sifter and sift into a large bowl. Cut butter into flour with a pastry blender or two knives until it is the size of peas. Using a fork and light, lifting motions, fluff the flour mixture as you drizzle in the buttermilk. Sprinkle a handful of flour onto a board or counter top. Dump the dough on top and sprinkle with another generous handful of flour. With flour coated hands, bring dough together into a mass and turn over times, just until it resembles a blob. Do not knead! Sprinkle lightly with flour and using a rolling pin, lightly level the top so that the blob is an even-ish 1 1/4 1 1/2 thick. Keeping a small bowl of flour next to you, dip biscuit cutter into the flour and then cut biscuit out with a single, downward motion (do not twist). Lift loaded cutter over an ungreased baking sheet and let biscuit drop, you may ease it along from top with a butter knife if necessary. Dip cutter in flour and cut another. Place the biscuits 1/2 apart on the shee
