It was his son who described Gian Lorenzo Bernini as ‘stern by nature, rock steady in work, warm in anger’. Born in Naples in and heralded as the next Michelangelo by the age of eight, by all accounts Bernini embodied the stereotypical haughty hot-headedness of the south. He was a man around whom a powerful mythology has been sculpted. His reputation, at least among his immediate predecessors, is easily discernible to us from the lengthy eulogising accounts by his primary biographers: amateur artist and gossipy raconteur Filippo Baldinucci and scholar Domenico Bernini, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s last, 11th, child.
Knighted at the age of 23, Bernini won the moniker ‘il Cavaliere’ as well as friends in high places, including the future pope Urban VIII, Maffeo Barberini. Through these channels he became accustomed to the sycophantic rhetoric of the age; especially from his influential friend, who is recorded to have said: ‘It is your great good luck, Cavaliere, to see Maffeo Barberini pope. Gian Lorenzo Bernini dominated the Roman art world of the seventeenth century, flourishing under the patronage of its cardinals and popes while also challenging contemporary artistic traditions. His sculptural and architectural projects reveal an innovative interpretation of subjects, use of forms, and combination of media. Forging a path for future artists, he played an instrumental role in establishing the dramatic and eloquent vocabulary of the Baroque style.
Sculptures
Gian Lorenzo first trained in the Roman workshop of his father Pietro, assisting with such sculptures as a pair of terms representing Spring and Fall in the guise of Flora and Priapus (); (). The classically inspired Bacchanal: A Faun Teased by Children(), one of his first independent works, takes as its point of departure the Mannerist motif of interwoven figures.
A series of over-lifesize marble statues commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese for his villa in Rome announced Bernini’s novel style and established his role as the foremost sculptor in Italy. Bernini was the leading sculptor of his age and also a prominent architect. A great student of classical art, he is credited with being a leading figure in creating the Baroque style of sculpture. Bernini&#;s sculptures are admired for his capacity to capture an almost shockingly realistic experience of humanity.
In addition to being a sculptor, he painted, wrote plays, and designed metalwork and stage sets.
He lived primarily in Rome and enjoyed the patronage of the Popes he lived under. Bernini worked under Pope Gregory XV, and Pope Urban VIII.
Bernini and Architecture
Bernini was also a leading figure in the emergence of Roman Baroque architecture along with his contemporaries, the architect Francesco Borromini and the painter and architect Pietro da Cortona. Early in their careers they had all worked at the same time at the Palazzo Barberini, initially under Carlo Maderno and, following his death, under Bernini.
