Corinne Day, remembered for transforming fashion photography
From sudden Fame to harsh Criticism
In many ways Corinne Day memory is shadowed by the moment of her greatest good fortune: her spotting of a Polaroid of a gangly Croydon teenager among the files of a London model agency in the spring of She brought a photograph of the year-old Kate Moss to Phil Bicker, the visionary art director of the Face magazine, then the single most influential style magazine in Europe. Back then, Bicker was busy reinventing British fashion photography as a gritty, altogether less glamorous form. He had gathered a bunch of young and ambitious photographers, including Glen Luchford, David Sims and Nigel Shafran, all of whom became successful in the fashion and art world. Corinne Day was perhaps the most temperamental, a feisty, self-taught, model-turned-photographer with attitude to burn.

Self taught, Day brought a more documentary look to fashion imagery, in which she often included autobiographical elements. She was known for forming long and close relationships with many of her muses including Kate Moss, Rosemary Ferguson, George Clements, Georgina Cooper, Sarah Murray, Tanya Court, and Tara St Hill, a way of working which resulted in candid and intimate portraits. Her first published work was for The Face magazine in - photographs of Kate Moss in an editorial titled the ‘3rd Summer of Love’. Day’s approach to fashion photography in the 90s, came to be known as ‘grunge’ and grew into an international style.
In Day was commissioned by British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman to photograph Kate Moss and her other sitters for the March issue cover shoot and main fashion story. The shoot and cover of Kate was met with huge praise. Later that year Day was commissioned for an intended lingerie fashion shoot for British Vogue that took place in Kate Moss’s own flat in West London. Transitioning from fashion model to fashion photographer, Corinne Day proves that the only rule for success is to remain true to your vision.
After traveling around the world as a model at the age of 18, Day met aspiring filmmaker Mark Szaszy on a train in Tokyo in However, after two weeks Day was expected in LA and Szaszy to Melbourne, Australia. Two years later, Day surprised Szaszy with a phone call and their romance picked up where it had left off. Together they travelled around Asia and Europe, where he taught her photography and they adapted their styles.
Living in Milan together, Day began photographing new models for their portfolios. Her ability to put the new faces at ease and communicate their personality made her a favourite with modelling agencies.
Being encouraged to enter fashion photography, Day quit modeling and took her new candid style back to her hometown, London. In , Day photographed a year old Kate Moss for The Face magazine. I left school at 16 with barely any education. All I wanted to do was travel but I had no money. I got a trainee job at a bank which made me laugh because my dad was a professional bank robber. By the time I was 18 I'd had a few jobs. I was seeing this boy Murray and he was flying all over the place as a courier. You know, like a glorified postman. So I got a job doing that and thats how I got into modelling. I met a photographer on a plane, all my friends laughed and said I'd end up on page 3 of the Sun.
