Donyale Luna.

This is the name I chose for my soul in a lifetime of dreams, visions and great cultural change.

They say I revolutionized the fashion industry as the world’s first Black supermodel during the ‘60s and ‘70s, but I just followed the wind that came upon me and pushed me through a life of discoveries and incredible adventures worldwide that I couldn’t resist. I simply followed my own vocation, my inner truth and watched my life evolve exactly how it was supposed to. 

I was born in Detroit on August 31, , the middle child of three sisters. My mum called me Little Peggy, that was my given name as well as hers, Peggy Ann Freeman.

It was not easy for me to fit in that box, or in any box.

I have always really wanted to make a life for myself and seize all the opportunities the world could offer.

I love Life. I love the purity of souls. I am happy and joyful and thankful for all the Beauty of the Universe.

For Donyale Luna it happened in when she walking along the street in her hometown of Detroit, when she was spotted by year-old English photographer David McCabe. He was struck by her tall, skinny, gangly frame, her wide smile and her startled, owlish expression. He invited the year-old to New York City to take up fashion modelling. At the time she had ambitions to be an actress, and was doing bit parts in Detroit’s repertory theatres, but she did not hesitate at McCabe’s offer, and said “yes” on the spot.

Before the Civil Rights Movement in America, African American models were visible in Black magazines such as Jet and Ebony, but non-white models were never seen on the covers of Western fashion magazines, on the runway, or in advertising.  With that movement, and especially the Civil Rights Act, the prohibition based on race began to end.

Donyale Luna’s modeling career was launched in April when Harper’s Bazaar, a magazine that had never had a Black person on its cover before, featured a line-drawing sketch of Luna. Luna was then signed to an exclusive one-year contract with Harper’s legendary fashion photographer, Richard Avedon.
