Since Herbie Hancock is among my alltime favorite artists, I would like to share this info about an upcoming talk about one of the most influential artists of our time. On November 24th, New Yorks Jazz Standard and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center present a virtual conversation about Herbie. Two members of his touring band, guitarist Lionel Loueke and bassist James Genus will join producer Seth Abramson, artistic director of the Jazz Standard, to discuss what its like to play with such a master.
Lionel Loueke just recently released his own unique Herbie Hancock praise in the form of his new LP HH. The live talk will be broadcast on November 24th from pm EST and you can tune in via the Jazz Standard Facebook page.
One of the Festival’s greatest ambassadors, Herbie Hancock is celebrating his 30th appearance this summer at Montreux, where the legendary keyboardist has previously shared a stage with Chick Corea, George Duke, Wayne Shorter, Quincy Jones and Carlos Santana, among many others. Herbie Hancock pioneered a revolutionary new sound as part of the Miles Davis Quintet, and was one of the leading architects of a style of jazz open to new musical trends. Head Hunter’s blend of electric jazz, funk and rock still influences many artists today, while the tracks “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked the incursion of electronic sounds and hip hop into jazz. Herbie Hancock has won 14 Grammy Awards and an Oscar, and is also the chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (today named Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz) and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

In addition to being recognized as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every jazz movement since the s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, he became one of the pioneers of the avant garde sound. His recordings during the 70s combined electric jazz with funk and rock sounds in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. Rockit and Future Shock marked Hancocks foray into electronic dance music and included several chart-topping hits; during the same period he continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P., which included ex-Miles Davis bandmates Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Hancock has received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for River: The Joni L

Lets get this right. You are going to review Herbie Hancock? The look of bamboozlement on a musicians face when I explained earlier this week where I would be on Friday night follows me around. And lets face it, the whole idea that a ‘reviewer’ gets to write about whether Herbie Hancock was actually any good (or not) does carry more than a hint of the presumptuous, not to say preposterous about it…
Supposing the lineup or project he was presenting was unusual or a bit outrageous, one might be able to comment about how the change was perceived but in this case, everything was just exactly as expected. Herbie on piano and keys, James Genus on bass, Jaylen Petinaud on drums, Lionel Loueke on guitar and voice and Terence Blanchard playing trumpet.
These musicians are all established artists in their own right and a wonderful mix of generations, nations and talents, with Petinaud at ‘not even 25’ and Loueke from Benin, West Africa, Blanchard who is known for his movie scores, and Genus who seems to have played with everyone from Bill Evans to the Saturday Night Live Band, Hancock has created quite the super-band
