Edward Lee Thomdike () has been rightly called America’s most productive psychologist. He was an indefatigable researcher with wide interests. He once described his career as “a conglomerate amassed under the pressure of varied opportunities and demands,” and he doubted whether being faithful to one’s own plans made science as rich as did following the world’s plans for the scientist. The American psychologist and educator Edward Lee Thorndike () was the originator of modern educational psychology and influenced 20th-century American education immeasurably.
Edward Lee Thorndike was born on Aug. 31, , in Williamsburg, Mass., a minister's son. Before he entered Wesleyan University in , his family had moved eight times within New England. Although this experience caused him to become self-reliant, it also left him reserved and shy; the lonely boy grew into a man happiest when alone with his work.
Thorndike was inspired by the psychological writings of William James, and after graduation from Wesleyan, Thorndike entered Harvard University to study under James. James let Thorndike perform learning experiments with animals in his own basement. Thorndike continued these experiments at Columbia University and published his results as Animal Intelligence (), his doctoral thesis. Thus, he reported the first carefully controlled experiments in comparative animal psychology. To study animal behavior scientifically, Thorndike invented the problem box and maze, techniques later adopted by other psychologists.

Edward Lee Thorndike (August 31, – August 9, ) was an Americaneducational and comparative psychologist who spent nearly his entire career at Teachers College, Columbia University. He formulated the basic law of operant learning, the law of effect. Thorndike’s importance for the twentieth century psychology is in his methodological and theoretical approach to animal learning and his formulation of a stimulus-response (S-R) psychology that he called "connectionism." Thorndike was striving to understand the learning process, through studying animals, to develop applications in education and thus benefit society. Although not formally a behaviorist, Thorndike's work was foundational to the development of American behavioristic psychology.
