As World War I entered its third year, Russia was on the brink of disaster. Tsar Nicholas II was unpopular due to Russia's poor performance in the conflict, declining living standards across the country, and the perception that his government was corrupt. This unpopularity was exacerbated by decades of poor governance. All of this culminated in March in a revolution that saw the overthrow of the Russian monarchy.

World War I began in when the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. This set off a chain of events that resulted in the major European powers going to war. The war perhaps affected no country more than Russia. Vladimir Illich Ulyanov (later known as Lenin) was born in Simbirsk, Russia, on 10th April, His father, Ilya Ulyanov, a former science teacher, had recently become a local schools inspector. He held conservative views and was a devout member of the Russian Orthodox Church. Lenin had two older siblings, Anna (born ) and Alexander (born ). They were followed by three more children, Olga (born ), Dmitry (born ), and Maria (born ). His mother, Maria Blank Ulyanov, had a German grandmother, and according to Maria Ulyanov. the children were "reared to a certain degree in German traditions". Maria was largely self-educated and taught herself German, French and English. She helped Vladimir with his studies and taught him to read and gave him piano lessons.
