हिमालय के राजा हिमवंत और उनकी पत्नी मेनादेवी शिव जी के भक्त थे। उनकी इच्छा एक ऐसी पुत्री पाने की थी जिसका विवाह में शिव जी के साथ कर सके। मेनादेवी ने शिवजी की पत्नी गौरीदेवी को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कठोर तपस्या शुरू कर दी। कई दिनों तक वह बिना खाए पिए तप करती रही। गौरीदेवी ने प्रसन्न होकर मेनादेवी की बेटी के रूप में जन्म लेने का वचन दे दिया।
गौरीदेवी ने आग में कूदकर अपनी जान दे दी। इसके बाद उन्होंने मेनादेवी की बेटी के रूप में जन्म लिया, जिसका नाम पार्वती रखा गया। पार्वती ने जब बोलना शुरू किया तो उनके मुंह में पहला शब्द शिव ही निकला। बड़ी होकर वह बहुत सुंदर युवती बनी।
इस बीच शिवजी ने अपनी पत्नी की मृत्यु से दुखी होकर लंबा ध्यान शुरू कर दिया था। हिमवंत को आशंका हो रही थी की शायद शिवजी गहन ध्यान मैं होने के कारण पार्वती को पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार ना करें। उन्होंने समस्या के समाधान के लिए नारद को बुलाया। नारद ने उनसे कहा कि पार्वती तपस्या के जरिए शिव जी का हृदय जीत सकती थी। हिमवंत ने पार्वती को शिव जी के पास ही भेज दिया। पार्वती ने दिन-रात
हिन्दू धर्म को मानने वाले भगवान शिव में बेहद आस्था रखते हैं और उनका स्थान सभी देवी देवताओं में सबसे उच्च माना जाता है, इसलिए उन्हें ‘देवों के देव महादेव’ भी कहा जाता है। भगवान शिव को बहुत सारे नामों से बुलाया जाता है, जिसमें से एक भोलेनाथ भी है और भोलेनाथ उन्हें इसलिए कहा जाता है, क्योंकि उन्हें प्रसन्न करना बेहद आसान है, बस भक्त के मन में श्रद्धा और प्रेम होनी चाहिए और जब वे किसी से प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं तो उसका मनचाहा वरदान प्रदान करने में जरा भी विलंभ नहीं करते हैं। ठीक वैसे ही जब बच्चा किसी से खुश हो जाता है तो बिना किसी कपट भाव के अपना सब कुछ देने के लिए तैयार हो जाता है। यही कारण है कि उन्हें भोले बाबा कहा जाता है।
