Louise is an incredible visionary and advocate. Everyone who had the privilege to meet her, either in person, or through her words, felt her passion for serving others. I first met Louise in the early 80’s during the AIDS crisis. In those fearful days when so many were taking a step back, she took a step forward.
She went on to create Hay House and become an even bigger force of nature. Not only did she get her healing words out as an author, but shared the words of so many other new as well as established authors. I had the privilege of co-authoring You Can Heal Your Heart with Louise. Many thought the woman who wrote so much of healing would be afraid to look at death and grief. But that was not Louise. Years ago, when we first talked about my work on grief, I asked her about her own death. She replied, “ I’ve lived my life fully. I just want to make sure that when the time comes, I live my dying fully.”

Difficult Childhood
Louise's childhood was far from ideal. She was born into a poor family, with no biological father and an alcoholic stepfather. Her mother worked tirelessly as a laundress, paying little attention to Louise. She was poorly fed, dressed in whatever was available, and often neglected. In addition to poverty, Louise was surrounded by people who had little regard for moral principles. At the young age of five, she experienced sexual abuse, and by fourteen, she willingly entered into casual relationships. At fifteen, she became a mother, although her child was later adopted.
