Sindhutai Sapkal was an Indian social worker who worked for the welfare of thousands of orphan children. She is bestowed with over national and international awards which include the Nari Shakti Award presented to her by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. On 4 January , she died of cardiac arrest in Pune, Maharashtra.

Sindhutai Sapkal was born on Sunday, 14 November (age 73 years; at the time of death) in Pimpri Meghe village, Wardha, Central Provinces and Berar, Dominion of India (present-day Maharashtra, India). Sindhutai Sapkal, a Marathi woman, the mother to more than a thousand impoverished children, the living legend and one of the most courageous personalities in India, started her life journey from the streets.

 

Her nickname was ‘Chindi’ meaning ‘torn cloth’ in Marathi. She was named thus as an unwanted child. From being called a chindhi, to being mai, the mother of over thousand orphans, Sindhutai Sapkal’s life is the portrayal of a brave fight put up by a single woman against the cruel systems of the society.

 

She was born on 14 November at Pimpri Meghe village in Wardha district Maharashtra to Abhimanji Sathe, a cowherd by profession. Her father was keen on educating Sindhutai, much against the wishes of her mother. Abhimanji used to send her to school under the pretext of cattle grazing, where she would use 'leaf of Bharadi Tree' as a slate as she could not afford a real slate because of financial reasons. Sindhutai Sapkal, better known as &#;Mai&#; or &#;Mother of Orphans,&#; was an Indian social worker and activist who uplifted the lives of orphans in India. 

By raising more than 1, orphans, she created a large family of sons-in-law and 49 daughters-in-law.

More than prizes have been given to her in recognition of her achievements. On top of that, she received Padma Shri in the social work category in

Sapkal never had any greed or love for fame; she did everything to help the needy and even used her award money to purchase land in order to build homes for orphaned children. 

Typically, orphanages only house their children until they turn 18 years old, but Sindhutai looks after her kids until they get employment, get wedded, and establish themselves in society.

Individual donations and other assistance from various backgrounds entirely supported her work.
