Biographie
À travers la sculpture, l’installation, la vidéo et la performance, Michel de Broin initie, par la voie de la métaphore et de l’analogie, des réflexions à propos des sphères publiques, sociales et politiques. Par un jeu d’association et de juxtaposition d’objets usuels, qui transforme de façon radicale leur signification, l’artiste québécois invente des systèmes mettant en jeu des forces qui s’attirent, se repoussent ou se supportent. Son travail s’attache à définir le fonctionnement des rapports humains comme un ensemble d’actions qui s’induisent et se répondent les unes aux autres.

Michel de Broin was born in in Montreal, Canada and today lives between Montreal and Berlin, Germany.
Outside Agent _ For over fifteen years, Michel de Broin has moved between Canada, France and Germany, distilling his experiments and inventions which expose the exertive and insoluble contradictions of power systems. Whilst obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montreal, his parallel first-exhibition in at the Circa (Montreal) named L’Opacité du Corps dans la Transparence des Circuits appeared like a manifest, already laying the ground-rules for his concerns. An electric circuit composed of a cable connecting two mineral oil recipients where respectively immerge a glass of red wine and, in the second, a light bulb. A vain attempt at a scientific experiment? The wine acts as a slow conductor, disturbing the energy flow thus the visitor operates a counter current between what it seen and the installation’s underlying message: an invisible loss of energy, a “weak” form of sabotage and a resistance by an impenetrable body - an inner agent. Entre le Canada, la France et l’Allemagne, Michel de Broin distille depuis plus de quinze ans ses expérimentations et inventions. Elles mettent à nu le fonctionnement et les apories des systèmes de pouvoir. Parallèlement à sa maîtrise à l’Université de Montréal, L’Opacité du corps dans la transparence des circuits, sa première exposition en au Circa (Montreal), annonçait déjà les préoccupations à venir de Michel de Broin, tel un manifeste. Un circuit électrique constitué d’un câble relie deux récipients d’huile minérale où sont respectivement immergés un verre de vin rouge et, dans le second, une ampoule électrique. Vaine expérience aux allures scientifiques? Le vin, piètre conducteur, perturbe le flux énergétique. Le visiteur peut ainsi opérer un court-circuit entre ce qu’il voit et ce que l’installation montre en creux : une perte invisible d’énergie, une forme ‘‘douce’’ de sabotage et de résistance par un «corps opaque», un agent extérieur.
