O Donovan Rossa:
Jeremiah O’Donovan was born on 10 th September at Chapel St (now
Rossa Ave) Rosscarbery. The name Rossa comes from Rossmore, where the
O’Donovan family had lived for generations. They were evicted, moving first to
Reenascreena, and then to Rosscarbery.
Jeremiah spent the first years of his life with his maternal grandparents in
Reenascreena, where Irish was the spoken language.

His father died in , and he recalls the death and burial of his neighbour

In he went to Skibbereen for work. He was involved with the setting up of
“The Phoenix National and Literary Society” there in Following James
Stephens visit to Skibbereen in , this became “The Fenian Society”.
In he married Nanno Eagar, from Milltown, Co Kerry. They set up their
own business, selling seeds and hardware. Jeremiah was arrested in , and
spent 8 months in Cork Gaol. Nanno died in , leaving Jeremiah with four
sons. In , Jeremiah married Eileen Buckley, from Castlehaven, they had
one son. Sadly, Eileen died in In

JEREMIAH O'Donovan Rossa was passionate about politics from a young age and grew to become one of the most important figures in Irish history, serving hard time in the toughest British prisons.
Born in Rosscarbery, Co. Cork on September 10, , he went on to found the Phoenix National and Literary Society in , which later merged with the Irish Republican Brotherhood.
After being sentenced to life in prison in England for plotting a Fenian uprising, he was later released as part of an amnesty on the condition that he would not return to Ireland.
Despite advocating dynamite attacks on English cities while residing in New York, he was later allowed to visit Ireland and his body was returned there for burial after his death.
At his historic funeral, Padraig Pearse delivered a famous oration ending with the words
“…but the fools, the fools, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace”
His words served as a call for public support for an uprising.

Born and raised in Rosscarbery, West Cork of County Cork in the South of Ireland during the Great Irish Famine, O'Donovan founded the Phoenix National and Literary Society and dedicated his life to working towards the establishment of an independent Irish Republic.
