Introduction

In India, it is second nature to consult an astrologer who suggests an auspicious time of Muhurat for an important event. In other words, Astrology and Astronomy is a part of our life. Our calendar both the solar and the lunar calendar accurately calculate the festivals, moon phases, eclipses and many other happenings in not just our solar system, but also the cosmos or the Universe. What is impressive is that our ancient Astronomers and Astrologers used mathematics to calculate the auspicious timing for important events in our life.

One thing our ancient scientists were aware of was that there is an order/ logic in this huge expanse and vastness. It is this realization that led to the discoveries in Mathematics.

Who is Brahmagupta?

Brahmagupta ( AD) was one such genius Astronomer - Mathematician. His father Jisnugupta was an Astrologer in the city of Bhinmal ( Rajasthan). Brahmagupta too considered himself an Astronomer however today he is remembered for his huge contri

Brahmagupta was an ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer who lived during the 6th and 7th centuries CE. He is considered one of the most significant figures in the history of Indian mathematics and made substantial contributions to various branches of mathematics and astronomy. Here are key aspects of Brahmagupta's life and work:

Brahmagupta was born in CE in Bhinmal, a town in present-day Rajasthan, India. Not much is known about his personal life, but he likely lived during the Gupta dynasty, a period often referred to as the "Golden Age" of ancient Indian mathematics. Unfortunately, historical records about the personal life of Brahmagupta are limited, and not much is known about his personal details or experiences.

The primary source of information about Brahmagupta's life and contributions comes from his own writings, particularly his mathematical and astronomical treatise, the "Brahmasphutasiddhanta" meaning "The Opening of the Universe." This mathematical and astronomical treatise covers various topics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and astronomy and provides insights into his mathematical genius and the knowledg

It is no doubt that the world today is greatly indebted to the contributions made by Indian mathematicians. One of the most important contribution made by them was the introduction of decimal system as well as the invention of zero. Here are some the famous Indian mathematicians dating back from Indus Valley civilization and Vedas to Modern times.

1. Aryabhata

Aryabhata worked on the place value system using letters to signify numbers and stating qualities. He discovered the position of nine planets and stated that these planets revolve around the sun. He also stated the correct number of days in a year that is More on Aryabhata.

2. Brahmagupta

The most significant contribution of Brahmagupta was the introduction of zero(0) to the mathematics which stood for &#;nothing&#;. More on Brahmagupta.

3. Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan is one of the celebrated Indian mathematicians. His important contributions to the field include Hardy-Ramanujan-Littlewood circle method in number theory, Roger-Ramanujan&#;s identities in partition of numbers, work on algebra of inequalities, elliptic functions, continued fractions, partial sums and products of hypergeometric ser

Early Life and Work

Brahmagupta was an Indian mathematician, born in AD in Bhinmal, a state of Rajhastan, India. He spent most of his life in Bhinmal which was under the rule of King Vyaghramukha. He was the head of the astronomical observatory at Ujjain which was the center of mathematics in India witnessing the work of many extraordinary mathematicians.

Brahmagupta wrote many textbooks for mathematics and astronomy while he was in Ujjain. These include ‘Durkeamynarda’ (), ‘Khandakhadyaka’ (), ‘Brahmasphutasiddhanta’ () and ‘Cadamakela’ (). The ‘Brahmasphutasiddhanta’ meaning the ‘Corrected Treatise of Brahma’ is one of his well-known works. It contains a lot of criticism on the work of his rival mathematicians. Brahmagupta had many discrepancies with his fellow mathematicians and most of the chapters of this book talked about the loopholes in their theories.

Contributions to Mathematics

One of the most significant input of Brahmagupta to mathematics was the introduction of ‘zero’ to the number system which stood for ‘nothing’. His work the ‘Brahmasphutasiddhanta’ contained many mathematical findings written in verse form. It had many rules of arithmetic which is part
