জন শেক্সপিয়রের লেখাপড়া তেমন ছিলো না; তাকে একপ্রকার অশিক্ষিত মানুষই বলা চলে। তবে উলের ব্যবসা ও নিজের জমিসহ বিয়ের সময় শ্বশুর থেকে পাওয়া যৌতুকে তার সম্পত্তির পরিমাণ ছিলো অনেক। একসময় শেক্সপিয়ারের বাবার ব্যাবসায় মন্দা শুরু হয়। ফলে শেক্সপিয়র সহ তার ভাইবোনরা বাবার ব্যবসার কাজে সহযোগিতা করতে কাজে লেগে পড়েন। শেক্সপিয়রের মোট ভাইবোন ছিলো ৮ জন, ৪ ভাই ও ৪ বোন। তার মধ্যে ২ বোন ছোটবেলাতেই মারা যায়।
