Robert Moffat (), missionary was born at Ormiston, East Lothian, [Scotland] on 21 Dec. His father was a customhouse officer; the family of his mother, Ann Gardiner, had lived for several generations at Ormiston. In the Moffats moved to Portsay, near Banff, and in to Carronshore, near Falkirk. Robert went at an early age to the parish school, and when he was eleven was sent, with an elder brother, to Mr. Paton's school at Falkirk. In he was apprenticed to a gardener, John Robertson of Parkhill, Polmont. During his apprenticeship he attended evening classes, learned to play a little on the violin, and took some lessons at the anvil. In his father was transferred to Inverkeithing, and the following year, on the expiration of his apprenticeship, Robert obtained a situation at Donibristle, Lord Moray's seat near Aberdour, Fifeshire. At the end of he was engaged as under-gardener by Mr. Leigh of High Leigh, Cheshire. He had received much religious training at home, and while in Leigh's service he came under the influence of some earnest Wesleyan methodists, which determined him to devote his life to religious work. Robert Moffat was a Scottish Congregationalist Pioneer Missionary to Africa and father-in-law of David Livingstone, born on 21st December in Ormiston, East Lothian in Scotland to poor parents. The educational advantages afforded him were limited, so, at a young age, he became an apprentice to learn gardening. Upon the completion of this apprenticeship, he moved to Cheshire in England to find an employment as a gardener where he was won to Christ through the efforts of the Wesleyan Methodists.
In , he was employed at West Hall High Legh in Cheshire and he experienced difficulties with his employer due to his Methodist sympathies. With an intense desire to serve the Lord burning within him, he attended a missionary conference being held in Manchester and there he felt the divine call to carry the Gospel to the heathen. For a short period, after having applied successfully to the London Missionary Society (LMS) to become an overseas missionary, he took an interim post as a farmer at Plantation Farm in Dukinfield, where he first met his future wife. One of the most remarkable early European visitors to the Magaliesberg region was the Scottish missionary Robert Moffat. He was born on 21 December in Ormiston, Scotland. His parents were not wealthy, and at the age of 13, he was apprenticed to a gardener. It was hard, physical labour, which no doubt developed in Moffat a toughness which stood him in good stead later in life. In the evenings Moffat attended classes, during which he not only learnt Latin, but was also given instruction in blacksmithing and playing the violin.
By , Moffat had found employment as a gardener in the village of High Leigh, Cheshire, England. It was here that he came into contact with Methodist evangelists, and readily accepted their message. Moffat went through a life-changing conversion experience, and committed himself to a life of missionary service. In September , he was formally commissioned as a missionary of the London Missionary Society (LMS), and was sent to South Africa.

Moffat grew up in central Scotland, but in he moved to England, where he began to work for James Smith, a pious Scottish merchant in Manchester. Smith’s daughter Mary would later join Moffat in South Africa as his wife. The London Missionary Society (LMS) accepted him for missionary service and sent him to South Africa in There, working on the northern frontier, he gained fame as a result of the conversion of a notorious bandit, Jager Afrikaner, and his followers. In in Cape Town, Moffat married Mary Smith. Working together as full partners, they began their long stay among the Tswana. While Robert was away on his many long treks, Mary not only ran the home but also the mission. After some moves they settled at Kuruman, which was to be their home until they left Africa. Here they created a large oasis of high fertility in a semiarid area. In , Mzilikazi, chief of the Ndebele (a Zulu offshoot), contacted Moffat, who then visited the chief and began a most extraordinary friendship.
