I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Peter Marshall's life, beginning with his humble beginnings in Scotland where he first yearned to serve God. The story of how this impoverished young man was led to the United States, how he became a Presbyterian minister, and how he ultimately became Chaplain of the Senate is filled with illustrations of ways a loving Heavenly Father frequently answers prayers through the actions of those He puts around us--and how we need to listen for the opportunities to meet others' spoken and unspoken needs.

The book is filled with amusing anecdotes, humbling shortfalls, and joyful triumphs. Written by his wife, Catherine Marshall (author of Christy), it is engaging and entertaining. Included in the text are excerpts from many of Peter's sermons that share his marvelous use of the English language and his philosophy of personalizing Christianity into a practical, practicable way of life.

I don't usually enjoy biographies, but I recommend this one!

On 11thMay Catherine Marshall chaired a meeting in Westminster Central Hall in London where there was a report on the Congress by the three delegates who had attended.  The delegates voiced appreciation of the British Committee of the Women’s International Congress and especially of Catherine Marshall who had become the Honorary Secretary. The Conference had significance:

‘It was the first international meeting to draw up an outline of the principles needed for a peace settlement to succeed. The Covenant of the League of Nations after the war is remarkably similar to the 20 resolutions passed by the delegates. They included democratic control of foreign policy, with no secret treaties, universal disarmament, future international disputes to be referred to arbitration – and of course, equal political rights for women, and the involvement of ordinary men and women in the final peace conference. Branches of what was to become the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom were set up throughout Europe, the US and other countries, indicative of the desire of many to work internationally.’ (8)

Catherine Marshall was born in to parents Reverend John Ambrose Wood and Leonora Whitaker Wood. In the 's she was married to Peter Marshall, Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. She soon gave birth to their son, Peter Jr. In , Catherine's devoted husband died of a tragic heart attack. She was left to care for their 9-year-old son. Soon afterwards, she began writing the very first of her more than 20 books, which have sold over sixteen million copies and include several collections of sermons and prayers by her late husband. By far, Catherine's biggest success was her novel, Christy, which was inspired by the story of her own mother's journey to the mountains to teach the impoverished children of Appalachia.

In , Catherine married Leonard LeSourd, who was the editor of Guideposts Magazine for twenty-eight years. She stepped into the role of mother for his three children. In , the LeSourds joined John and Elizabeth Sherill to form Chosen Books Publishing Company in Lincoln, Virginia.
