Understanding Amy Koppelman
Its a good time to be writer Amy Koppelman. The end of last month saw the release of I Smile Back, a film based on the New York-based writers second novel. In it, comedian Sarah Silverman does a stunning turn as a troubled New Jersey housewife on the edge. On Thursday, Koppelmans third novel, Hesitation Wounds, will come out via The Overlook Press. Somber and absorbing, Hesitation Wounds follows a renowned psychiatrist Susanna Seliger who is forced to consider her own meticulously papered-over trauma after treating an unraveling patient.
What makes Koppelmans success all the more gratifying, however, is her unconventional route from bookshelf to cineplex. While Koppelman is familiar with the film industry through her husband, producer and writer Brian Koppelman, her novels are not the page-turning, cliff-hanger types that usually get green-lit by studio execs. Instead, I Smile Back and Hesitation Woulds deal with the gritty, unsettling, and complicated topics of depression and addiction in a prose that is both elegant and quietly devastating. As Koppelman reveals, turning a modest selling novel into a film was as much about

ABOUT A MOUTHFUL OF AIR:
It seems strange to give A MOUTHFUL OF AIR (Two Dollar Radio, August 17 ) such lavish praise, because the subject matter is really quite dark, but the execution of this near-autofiction is just so gorgeously rendered, I felt truly amazed and almost tremulous in its company. Amy Koppelman penned A Mouthful of Air, a powerful novel years ahead of its time—and now, 20 years on, she discusses the film version of it she directed that hits theaters this month. Amy Koppelman's debut novel, A Mouthful of Air, was in part inspired by the suicide death of rock star Kurt Cobain in It got Koppelman, whose writings have appeared in the New York Observer and Lilith, to start thinking about how depression is often underplayed. A victim of such depression herself, Koppelman found a way to express herself in the story of how a deep and long-lasting depression affects a young wife and mother. In the novel, Koppelman focuses on New Yorker Julie, who is married to a successful lawyer, Ethan, and is the mother of a baby boy. Not long after giving birth, however, she sinks into a depression and attempts to kill herself. With the help

Compared to classic feminist works such as Charlotte Perkins Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper and Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar, A MOUTHFUL OF AIR is a powerful, tragic, and haunting examination of one womans love for her family but also her interior struggles.
Amy Koppelman has published three novels. Two have been made into movies. I Smile Back, her second novel, was made into a devastating film starring Sarah Silverman. Coming out this fall is her second film, based on her first novel. Both the book and the movie are titled A Mouthful of Air, and Amy Koppelman both wrote and directed this movie. If there’s one thing all of her work has in common, books and films, it’s their emotional intensity and a willingness to take on difficult subjects like trauma, depression and aloneness. Also, she really knows how to tell a really good story. Amy Koppelman, welcome to Design Matters.
Thank you.
