Seppure non si possa dire che con Ascanio Sforza () si creassero le condizioni per l’inserimento della famiglia Sforza nell’ambiente romano, pure dobbiamo considerare che egli fu il primo di una serie di ecclesiastici di tale famiglia che riuscirono ad assumere cariche molto importanti che spesso permetterono loro di rimanere nella città, accanto alla sede pontificia. In alcuni casi le stesse cariche consentirono l’acquisizione di beni immobili, come accaduto per l’attuale palazzo Sforza-Cesarini un tempo adibito a Cancelleria Apostolica.
La carriera di Ascanio, che non fu il primo prelato della famiglia, subì alterne vicende, spesso legate a quelle dei duchi Sforza di Milano. Nel , quando Ludovico divenne governatore di Milano, Ascanio poté rientrare dall’esilio perugino e nello stesso anno gli venne conferito da Papa Sisto IV il Vescovato di Pavia. Nel fu, dallo stesso Ludovico, esiliato a Ferrara, essendo egli di parte ghibellina, ma dopo la riconciliazione avvenuta nel Ascanio rimase sempre molto vicino alla persona e agli interessi di Ludovico.

Nacque Ascanio Maria l’anno , da Francesco I Sforza duca di Mlilano, naturale di Sforza e di Bianca Visconti, figliuola naturale di Filippo Maria Visconti, ed ebbe cinque fratelli tutti da un padre e da una madre nati. Galeazzo che fu primogenito e che nacque prima che Francesco Sforza avesse in possesso il ducato di Milano; Sforza, che fu duca di Bari e secondogenito, e Lodovico terzogenito; Ascanio quarto ed Ottaviano. Galeazzo successe nel ducato di Milano al padre, ma per una congiura fu in S. Stefano in Broglio ammazzato proprio il Giorno di S. Stefano da congiurati l’anno ; e restando Bona, duchessa, tutrice de’ piccoli figliuoli e reggente del ducato, Ascanio coi fratelli congiurarono contra la duchessa Bona. Il perché per acquetare questi fratelli fu ordinato dar a loro ogni anno diecimila e cinquecento scudi per uno sopra all’entrata della città di Cremona, dote della madre loro, e vi furono deputati i palazzi fuori di corte per abitare. Although it cannot be affirmed that Ascanio Sforza () created the conditions for the Sforza family’s introduction into the Roman milieu, he was the first , of many clergymen of the family, to assume important ecclesiastical roles which enabled the family to remain in the eternal city, next to the papal seat. In some cases, the roles assigned to these clergymen, enabled them to acquire important properties such as the present Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, once used as the Apostolic Chancellery.
Ascanio’s career, who was not the first prelate of the family, faced numerous and alternate vicissitudes, often related to those of the Dukes of Milan. In , when Ludovico became governor of Milan, Ascanio was able to return from his exile in Perugia and in that same year, Pope Sisto IV assigned him the Bishopric of Pavia. On the basis that he favored the Ghibellines, in Ascanio was again exiled in Ferrara by Ludovico but after the reconciliation that occurred in , Ascanio remained constantly very close to the person and interests of Ludovico.
