David Livingstone
David Livingstone was born on 19 March, in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. His father was a committed Protestant Sunday school teacher and probably influenced the young David to grew up with an aspiration to become a missionary.
Since his family was poor, David worked from the age of 10 to 26 at a cotton mill company and did his school work during the evenings and at weekends. He then studied medicine in Glasgow before going on to train with the London Missionary Society for a year. After studying at various institutions, he completed his medical studies in in London, England.
From an early age, David was intrigued by geology, science and the natural world. He was concerned that science would clash with religion. However, after reading Thomas Dick’s Philosophy of a Future State, David was able to reconcile religion with science.
He moved to Africa as a medical missionary in , arriving in the Cape Colony (Cape Town, South Africa) on 15 March, He reached Robert Moffat's station, Kuruman, at the time an outpost of European penetration in southern Africa, on July

Livingstone began work in the local cotton mill at the age of ten but attended the mill school from eight until ten o’clock each evening and achieved university entrance qualifications. He attended the Andersonian Medical School in Glasgow while working in the mill for part of the year to support himself. He was accepted for service by the London Missionary Society (LMS) and in went to London for theological training while continuing his medical studies there. He returned to Glasgow only to take his medical final exams.

After his ordination in London, he sailed for Cape Town and arrived in March He served for a time under Robert Moffat among the Tswana, in whose language he was soon fluent, and in married Moffat’s daughter Mary. He was determined to bring the gospel to the free peoples beyond the white-dominated south.
