Lieutenant Charles Joseph Gliniewicz of the Fox Lake Police Department died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds while on duty in Fox Lake, Illinois, on September 1, , according to investigators as reported by CNN and other news outlets.
George Filenko, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force commander said, the scene was "a carefully staged suicide." Further investigation into activities before his death revealed that Gliniewicz had been stealing and laundering money for at least seven years from a police department program to mentor young people who aspired to become law enforcement officers.
The shooting happened about 10 minutes before 8 a.m., after Lt. Joe Gliniewicz sent word over his radio that he was pursuing three suspects on foot, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.
Radio communication dropped off and backup officers were sent. They found the officer with a gunshot wound.
Gliniewicz worked for Fox Lake Police, a community of about 60, people in Lake County, about 60 miles north of Chicago. He was a year veteran, Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit told reporters.

As head of his local Explorer youth program, Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz would stage murder scenes as a training exercise for aspiring cops.
Turns out the last murder scene he staged, in a swamp 60 miles north of Chicago, was his own.
Hailed two months ago as a hero who gave his life to protect the public, Gliniewicz had actually shot himself in the chest after calling in a bogus request for backup — a suicide to cover up seven years of embezzlement from the Explorer program, officials revealed Wednesday.
Gliniewicz’s Sept. 1 death had been national news.
The year-old father of four and year police veteran radioed for help to his Fox Lake police colleagues, claiming he was pursuing three “suspicious” individuals on foot through the swamp.
The search for those three phantom suspects went on for days, involving the FBI and law enforcement from neighboring towns. Helicopters and bloodhounds joined in the search.
Gliniewicz, who’d planned to retire at the end of September, was buried with honors and accolades.
But over the next two months, the crime scene Gliniewicz set up began to unravel.

FOX LAKE, Ill. - Melodie Gliniewicz, widow of disgraced Fox Lake police lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz, was sentenced Tuesday to 24 months probation.
She pleaded guilty to one count of deceptive practices in February. As part of the agreement, all other preexisting counts were dropped against her.
Melodie Gliniewicz was accused of assisting her husband in embezzling money from the Fox Lake Police Explorer program, which helped young people who were interested in a career in law enforcement.
In sentencing Gliniewicz, Lake County Judge James Booras said that there was no indication that Gliniewicz took any money from the Fox Lake Explorers Post that her husband oversaw. Booras said her involvement was totally the result of her late husband, Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joe Gliniewicz&#x;s scheme to use thousands of dollars from the program&#x;s funds to pay for a vacation, meals, health club membership and other personal expenses.
Further, he said, "The defendant appears to be rehabilitated."
