Lehmann’s concept of a postdramatic theatre – that is, a theatre that has moved beyond the central importance of dramatic texts—is surveyed some two decades after he made his primary interventions in the field. The article furthermore reviews Lehmann’s influence in the Anglophone discipline of theatre studies and in the global field of theatre production. Hans-Thies Lehmann, uno de los teóricos teatrales alemanes más importantes de la actualidad, abreva en sus estudios anteriores sobre la tragedia antigua (Teatro y mito), y en su obra de referencia Teatro posdramático, para postular en su nuevo libro una teoría de la tragedia que va desde la Antigüedad hasta algunas manifestaciones escénicas de nuestros días, no necesariamente ligadas al concepto de lo dramático. Aquí explica que el concepto de experiencia trágica está estrechamente vinculado al de experiencia teatral. El núcleo de este estudio lo constituyen la tragedia moderna desde el Renacimiento y la pregunta por la actualidad de la tragedia.
El pasado 16 de julio, a la edad de 77 años, partió de esta tierra Hans-Thies Lehmann, uno de los estudiosos del teatro más eminentes y reconocidos internacionalmente. Experto en Bertolt Brecht y Heiner Müller, fue presidente de la Sociedad Internacional Brecht. Su innovador y revolucionario estudio Postdramatic Theatre, publicado en , analizaba los desarrollos y cambios en el teatro (sobre todo europeo) desde la década de , con su cada vez mayor separación del texto y su marcado carácter performativo.
