Hiro Mashima est né le 3 mai à Nagano. Il débute sa carrière de mangaka en lorsqu’il est sélectionné pour le soixantième Grand Prix des nouveaux mangaka, avec son histoire courte Magician, qui sera publiée en novembre dans le Weekly Shonen Magazine.

Dans le même temps, une autre de ses histoires courtes, Bad Boys Song, est publiée dans le magazine Fresh. Il acquiert ainsi la légitimité qu’il lui manquait pour publier le début de Rave en juillet dans le numéro 32 du Shukan Shônen Magazine. La série rencontre le succès, et l’auteur est propulsé à la tête d'une série majeure à seulement 22 ans, sans avoir jamais été l'assistant d'un autre mangaka.
Il met un terme à Rave après 6 ans de parution hebdomadaire, durant lesquelles il aura aussi réalisé des histoires courtes, (Mashima En) des artbooks, des guide books,et autres hors-séries.
