Iran jails regime critic Sadegh Zibakalam
Sadegh Zibakalam, a distinguished former political science professor and prominent critic of the Iranian regime, has been detained and sentenced to jail, according to Iranian media reports.
The charges against Zibakalam were related to spreading "propaganda" against the Islamic Republic, as reported by the Iranian judiciary's news website Mizan.
The report said Zibakalam will serve at least 18 months. He is to be sent to Tehran's notorious Evin prison, where numerous political prisoners, including human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, are incarcerated.
Mohammadi and other Evin inmates have reported accounts of torture and other human rights abuses taking place inside the prison.
Who is Sadegh Zibakalam?
Although Zibakalam frequently ran afoul of Iran's regime, this is the first time he has been jailed.
The year-old had recently published a book titled, "Why Don't They Take You?".
"I wrote this book because I am constantly asked why I am not arrested," Zibakalam told Iran's online news portal Khabar in an interview published over the weekend.

صادق زیباکلام مفرد (Sadegh Zibakalam) در 22 خرداد سال در جنوب خیابان ری تهران متولد شد. پدرش تاجر بود و اوضاع اقتصادی مناسبی داشت و از نظر سیاسی، در حزب زحمتکشان به رهبری مظفر بقایی فعالیت میکرد.
صادق زیباکلام تحصیلات ابتدایی تا دیپلم را در تهران گذراند و در سال در دانشگاه تهران پذیرفته شد، اما با توجه به درگیریهای سیاسی آن زمان در این دانشگاه، پدرش او را به ادامهی تحصیل در خارج از کشور ترغیب کرد و به اتریش فرستاد. زیباکلام در اتریش با تفکرات مارکسیستی خو گرفت. از این رو تحصیل را در این کشور رها کرد و در سال به انگلستان رفت.
در انگلیس، دورهی دوسالهی کالج را گذراند و سپس وارد دانشگاه پلی تکنیک شهر هادرزفیلد شد. در آنجا به تحصیل در رشتهی مهندسی شیمی پرداخت. او این رشته را تا اواسط مقطع دکترا در دانشگاه برادفورد ادامه داد، اما در این بین پس از 7 سال به ایران بازگشت که با ورود به کشور، به جرم جاسوسی توسط مأموران ساواک دستگیر شد. آنها گذرنامهی زیباکلام را ضبط کرده و ممنوعالخروجش کردند. همچنین دو سال زندان برایش در نظر گرفتند.

Für seine Haltung zeichnete ihn das deutsche Nachrichtenportal Deutsche Welle in Bonn mit dem DW Freedom of Speech Award aus. Zibakalam widmete den Preis allen politischen Gefangenen in seinem Land.

Sadegh Zibakalam, retired professor of political science at Tehran University, has been labeled “the most dangerous man in Iran” by Tablet magazine for his readiness to challenge the Iranian regime.
As a political analyst, Zibakalam is giving voice to the groundswell of Iranians who refuse the regime’s insistence on hating Israel, defiantly praising Netanyahu instead.
