Pádraig Ó Tuama: On Circumnavigating the Gaps, the Poetic Voice, and His New Collection ‘Kitchen Hymns’

Pádraig Ó Tuama is a poet, theologian, professor, conflict resolution mediator, and host of On Being’s podcast, Poetry Unbound. For over two years, Pádraig was a voice I heard about once a week on the Poetry Unbound podcast, where the host [Pádraig] reads and explores various poems from countless poets worldwide. It was here I developed an interest in Pádraig’s work, and not just because of his pleasing Irish accent.

He is the author of several books of poetry, including the collection, Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World. His forthcoming collection, Kitchen Hymns(Copper Canyon Press, ), becomes available for purchase in mid-January. As a poet and theologian, Ó Tuama’s work delves into the human psyche through the lens of history, religion, spirituality, and identity. Kitchen Hymns is a collection of returning, of letting go, and of forgiveness. Through narrative, character, dialogue, and memory, Ó Tuama opens the reader to his deeply personal experiences for the sake of contemplation and wonderment. His love for poetic craft and narrative forges a rousin

In the early days of the pandemic, when health officials were advising people to sing Happy Birthday twice while washing their hands, poet and theologian Pádraig Ó Tuama knew there had to be something better to recite. So he started scrubbing along to W. B. Yeats’s poem To a Child Dancing in the Wind. “That lasted the right amount of time — and it’s much nicer to recite to yourself,” he says, laughing.

As a gay man growing up Catholic in conflict-ridden Northern Ireland, Ó Tuama turned to poetry as his language of survival. “It never occurred to me that I might want to think about this as a career,” he recalls. “It was so much more important than a career; it was a way of life.” Now, as a critically acclaimed poet and the host of On Being Studios’ Poetry Unbound podcast, Ó Tuama has embraced poetry as his vocation.

Behind Poetry Unbound is a radical vision for today’s hurried world: that readers will pause twice a week and slow down long enough to listen to poetry. Each episode runs about 15 minutes and unfolds like a sacred ritual, with Ó Tuama’s calming voice coming together with meditative music to enhance the contemplative feel. He always begins with a readi

ART EXHIBITION: When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65, May 27–October 1, , City Art Centre, Edinburgh: City Art Centre in Edinburgh is hosting a major retrospective of one of the UK’s leading figurative painters, Peter Howson, who first emerged during the mids as one of the New Glasgow Boys and whom the art critic Donald Kuspit dubbed the “Scottish Bosch.” Curated by David Patterson, the exhibition brings together some one hundred works spanning the artist’s career, many never seen before in Scotland, with subjects ranging from working-class Glasgow men to the Bosnian War (into which Howson was sent as official war artist) to biblical stories. His work deals with themes of aggression, struggle, and faith.

Artist and art educator Tessa Asquith-Lamb discusses five key works from the exhibition in this twenty-minute video:

“I like to bring the Bible into this world we live in today,” says Howson, who is a Christian. (He made headlines when he went public with the story of his religious conversion while undergoing treatment for alcohol and drug abuse in ) Reflecting on the reception of and motivation behind his biblical works, he said in a recent video intervie

Episode Pádraig Ó Tuama &#; A Poetic Look at the Bible

Jared Byas: You&#;re listening to Faith for Normal People, the only other God ordained podcast on the internet.

Pete Enns: I&#;m Pete Enns.

Jared Byas: And I&#;m Jared Byas. [Intro music plays]

Before we get started with our episode today, we need to take a minute to celebrate because our newest Bible for Normal People commentary, Revelation for Normal People, is out now. And again, in this book, New Testament scholar Robyn Whitaker uncovers the real world context behind this ancient, apocalyptic, and usually confusing text, helping us find meaning for our own time.

As many of you know, I mentioned this before, I grew up being taught that the Left Behind series was accurate biblical interpretation. Things like microchips and barcodes were signs of the Antichrist, and I was taught conspiracy theories that to this day have real political and social implications. And a lot of that came from a certain reading of the book of Revelation.

So, reading Revelation well continues to be so important. So check out this book by Robyn Whitaker. Buy your copy of Revelation from Normal People today, wherever you like
