ON THE PRACTICE OF BIOGRAPHY IN NEW ZEALAND
THE PROJECT of publishing a national biography of New Zealand was first entertained by me about the year At that time I carried out fairly exhaustive research, with the rather limited sources then available, in order to arrive at some conclusions as to the social origins of the New Zealand people and the significance of the various racial elements. More than sixty years had then elapsed since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which marked the advent of British sovereignty, and about thirty since the abolition of the provinces. There were still alive a few pioneers of the early years of the Colony who had a reliable recollection of events that occurred in the first period. There were also some survivors of the Provincial Counci
Online version of Dictionary of NZ Biography
Prime Minister and Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark this evening launched the online Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, saying it increases the availability of a major historical resource to many New Zealanders.
The new website, , makes available online all the biographies in the five volume series of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and its Maori language companion series.
The site contains all biographies from the five-volume DNZB series (and its parallel Maori-language volumes), over images, and a substantial new feature – Our Land, Our People – of historical events and trends with graphics and text. Much of this material was adapted under licence from the New Zealand Historical Atlas ().
“I believe strongly in the importance of New Zealanders learning about and taking pride in our rich history. The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography project is a superb historical resource, and placing it online will make it vastly more accessible to many New Zealanders.
“The website is a vast repository of knowledge about our country. It contains biographies of New Zealanders who have made their mark on the count
About this Website
The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography () by Guy Hardy Scholefield is available on the NZ History website as two PDFs (Volume 1, Volume 2). Surprisingly the dictionary does not include any index of names, and while a text search is possible (thanks to OCR), quickly locating specific names is difficult.
I decided to index the Dictionary so that names could be matched against searches on my 🌳 Ancestor Search Helper site. This project was also a way to try out various AI tools in my workflow.
Copyright
My understanding is that the Dictionary is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial New Zealand Licence (according to the NZ History website footer).
I offer this indexed version of Scholefield's Dictionary of New Zealand Biography as a freely available resource, and I believe that this is consistent with the spirit of the Creative Commons licence.
Indexing Notes
Despite my initial expectations that the indexing would be straightforward, I hit an early hurdle: simply copying and pasting the text of the PDFs appeared to work, but on closer inspection many entries were garbled, because the original OCR did not separate the columns of t
